2. Grammar and Vocabulary: Use of irregular verbs (e.g. broke → break), identifying comparative adjectives, locating past tense and metaphorical phrases, recognising punctuation types (e.g. speech marks, commas, exclamation marks).
3. Character Understanding and Inference: Inferring Polly′s and Joel′s personalities (e.g. Polly feeling average, Joel surprising her); discussing character motivation; supporting answers with textual evidence (e.g. Polly hiding swimming struggle, Joel’s rare cooperation).
4. Themes and Opinions: Recognising story themes (e.g. climate change, family relationships); evaluating characters (e.g. whether Joel would make a good brother); personal response to setting and story situation, supported by quotations.
5. Text Structure and Cohesion: Linking ideas across paragraphs (e.g. lines in Part 2 and Part 3), tracking narrative development, understanding how small details support larger themes (e.g. environmental concerns, family dynamics).
6. Creative Writing (Story Continuation): Writing a logical and imaginative continuation of the story; including conflict, consequence, and resolution; maintaining character voices and setting; following narrative conventions with clear structure and language.
