1. Listening and reading comprehension in Japanese based on real-life contexts: school events, part-time jobs, hobbies, family life, environmental issues, and cultural experiences

2. Vocabulary and grammar tested through sentence gap-fills, matching statements to characters, and interpreting text for inference, tense, and opinion recognition

3. Cultural themes: traditional Japanese sports (kendō), school trips (e.g. Hokkaido ski visit), local community involvement in sports day, music and orchestral reputation, environmental cleanup and volunteering

4. Literary and fictional texts: analysis of short stories like ‘Go nin no ekichō san’ and ‘Aru chōkoku ka’, understanding emotions (e.g. sadness, pleasure), character motivation, visual detail, and setting description

5. Translation task: daily life experience involving a baseball match between Japan and the USA, personal enjoyment, and desire to repeat the experience – tests tense, subject-object alignment, vocabulary precision

6. Section structure:
– Section A: reading and comprehension in English
– Section B: English translation from Japanese
– Mix of multiple choice, short answer, and fill-in-the-gap tasks, total 50 marks
