Progression Test Stage 9 English as a Second Language 2025 Paper 3

1. Functional writing: message to a lesson provider, covering purpose, experience level, and relevant questions in 45–55 words (clarity, coherence, accuracy)
2. Discursive writing: argumentative essay (110–130 words) on online shopping vs in-store, including structured opinion, supporting examples, and conclusion
3. Language features: accurate grammar (present simple, comparatives), vocabulary range (e.g. ‘convenient’, ‘expensive’, ‘delivery’), connectors (e.g. ‘however’, ‘because’)
4. Task response: fulfilling specific content points (why learn, how much experience, what to ask), clear topic sentence, logically developed body, and relevant conclusion
5. Writing assessment focus: coherence and cohesion, paragraph structure, appropriate tone and style for informal message and semi-formal opinion essay
6. Target level: CEFR A2–B1 (clear communicative intent, limited errors, development of ideas in structured form, appropriate use of linking and paragraphing)
