Progression Test Stage 7 English as a Second Language 2025 Paper 3

1. Part 1 – Functional writing: informal message to friend including invitation to shop, reason for shopping (e.g. buying clothes or gifts), and activity suggestion after (e.g. café visit, film) within 35–45 words
2. Audience and tone: casual, friendly register appropriate for peer conversation; clarity in purpose and timing
3. Part 2 – Discursive writing: opinion essay on whether watching films in a cinema is better than at home; requires comparison of experience, comfort, sound/picture quality, cost, and social aspects
4. Structure expectations: introduction, two contrasting points, and conclusion; 90–110 words with logical flow and connectors (e.g. however, because, also)
5. Grammar and style: present tense consistency, use of opinion phrases (e.g. I think, In my opinion), sentence variety, accurate punctuation and spelling
